The Magician or Magus is given the number one in the Major Arcana. There are twenty two cards in the Major Arcana. Twenty one are numbered cards and the Fool is zero. The Magician is posed ready to create. With his wand, he draws down that from above (spirit) and directs it into matter. His four tools correspond to the four elements. They also appear in the Minor Arcana as the four suits often called wands; cups; pentacles and swords. (these descriptive terms vary from deck to deck) Wands are often assoicated with Fire and correspond to spirit. Swords correspond to air and the realm of the mind. Cups correspond to water and represent the emotions. The pentacles represent earth as well as material life of money; nature; posessions. The tools of the Magician are the same tools we're all given to create our life.
The Magician reminds us that we are all "captains of our own ship" and having been given Free Will, we need to learn how to use it. We can direct the attention in our own life and hone our ability to focus and visualize in order to create a life that's meaningful to us. In order to Be Yourself you first have to Know Yourself. The Tarot is a great tool for starting this process. Knowing what your true will is comes from knowing your true self.
